The larynx will be examined using an endoscope. This is an instrument that is used to examine the inside of the body. A lens system is used to transmit the image to the observer.

For the larynx, there are two different types.
A flexible fibre-optic scope is a narrow tube that is inserted through the nose and a rigid scope consists of a straight instrument that is placed at the back of the mouth.

Both of these techniques sound uncomfortable but the examination is usually more straightforward.
